Project Type: Personal Project (Game Jam)

Year and Duration: October 2019

Team Size: 1

OVERVIEW
Goals

Make a kick-ass game for India's Biggest Game Jam

Description

Gameplay: The player plays as a vigilante looking at newspaper articles about crime in their area, choose a criminal to defeat in turn-based combat. However, manage your own stats: if you get too popular or injured you lose!

At the time of the game jam, I was working on a lot of simulations for my job at the time, I figured, I could probably make a whole game on excel, luckily IGDC Game jam was around the corner and I could use this opportunity to make this game. â€‹

The game design is simple turn-based combat with a few different enemies and basic attacks. Game still has some progression elements, for example, enemies get tougher the more you play. Overall, this game was a fun experiment to make. The intention was to make a stand-alone game which is feature complete and not an incomplete experience.

The trickiest part was getting the animations and sounds to work

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ROLES
Key responsibilities
  • Learn VBA! (Learnt how to use VBA and made this game in the 2 week duration of the jam)

  • Figure out and implement a working combat system with some sense of progression and

  • Implement animations and art! The biggest challenge here was how to use 'assets' with excel on a platform. Ended up colouring cells on excel like pixel art and 'spawning' them when required

  • Begged my friends and co-workers to make silly voice lines to be used as sounds in this game

  • Game balancing

  • Scripting

EXPERIENCE
Learning opportunity

This was a really fun project, working with these constraints was very fulfilling, and overall really happy with how it turned out.

Since this project, I have simulated gameplay for 10+ games on excel as 'Paper Prototypes'

This project was key to really accelerating my game and economy simulation skills.

Awards and Recognition
